The humanities seek to answer the fundamental question: what does it mean to be human? By awakening a sense of what it might be like to be someone else or to live in another time or culture, the humanities tell us about ourselves, stretch our imagination, and enrich our experience. The content of the humanities arises from our need as human beings to supply ourselves with a world of common meanings that stretch across time and across human societies. The humanities are vital to American society-to our self-awareness, our culture, and our vision of the future.
