Academic Opportunities in the Humanities

Nine departments and programs constitute the humanities at UCSC offering 11 baccalaureate degrees, 4 masters degrees, and 5 Ph.D. degrees, many of which are interdisciplinary.

Two departments, Linguistics and History of Consciousness, are nationally ranked among the top programs in the U.S. All programs provide opportunities for undergraduates to be directly involved in research.

Several research centers and institutes, including the Institute for Humanities Research, the Center for Cultural Studies, the Institute for Advanced Feminist Research, the Linguistics Research Center, and the Dickens Project, provide opportunities for students to become actively engaged in research and initiate independent research projects. Our graduates go on to successful careers in education, public service, technology, industry, law government and the creative arts.
