Humanities Research Fellowships

Past Fellowship Recipients

The Institute for Humanities Research is pleased to announce its program of Humanities Research Fellowships. These fellowships provide faculty in the Humanities with one course replacement in order to pursue their research. Each fellowship recipient is also awarded $800 to be used for research expenses, which include the hiring of a GSR, travel, and the purchase of computer equipment. These funds will be deposited to a research account. Course replacement funds will be transferred directly to the faculty member's department. Research funds not expended by fiscal close of the year of your fellowship will return to the IHR.

Applications should consist of

  • 1) a one-page cover letter providing a brief description of research plans, essential contact information (e-mail, telephone, address, departmental affiliation), desired term of fellowship, and any plans for replacement of course offering;
  • 2) a two-page curriculum vitae that includes selected publications and grants and awards received in the past three years, including the current year (please do not send your bio-bib);
  • 3) a three-page (double-spaced) research proposal containing a description of the topic of research, the publication (or other result) to which the fellowship period will contribute, and a selected bibliography.
The cover letter should contain a short statement of endorsement regarding course replacement from the department chair. Please send four copies of the complete application to the IHR (mailstop: IHR/CCS).

Applications will be screened by a confidential ad hoc committee consisting of three faculty from a range of departments in the Humanities Division. This committee will make recommendations to the Steering Committee of the IHR. The Steering Committee will then make the final selection.

Small Faculty Grants

The IHR has established a modest fund for faculty research support, intended to contribute toward conference attendance, costs associated with publication (editing, indices, illustrations, formatting, printing and copying), and research-related travel and expenses.

Applications for funding should consist of a letter describing the proposed use of funds and detailing any other sources of support. The IHR will consider requests up to $600, but because funding is limited, we especially welcome requests for lesser amounts.  Please address your requests to the Institute for Humanities Research, Oakes Faculty Services.
