Dissertation Fellowships

Past Fellowship Recipients

The IHR will offer a limited number of Dissertation Fellowships for the 2008-2009 academic year. The fellowship will provide funds intended to cover fees and a stipend for one quarter of support. Fellowship recipients are expected to devote themselves to writing during that quarter, and not to hold teaching assistantships or other employment.

Applications for the fellowship should consist of a cover letter, which includes a dissertation progress report and statement of previous and current awards and grants; a curriculum vitae; a prospectus (3-5 pages preferred; maximum 10 double-spaced pages); and a letter of recommendation from the dissertation advisor. Please specify the quarter in which you would prefer to receive the fellowship.

The complete application should be emailed as a single attachment to IHR Program Manager Stephanie Casher (scasher@ucsc.edu). Faculty letters of recommendation should be sent as attachments to scasher@ucsc.edu.

Although the primary criterion will be the quality of the proposal, preference will be given to students nearing completion of the dissertation and those who have not received substantial prior dissertation fellowship support.

Disbursement of awards will be handled through the Division of Graduate Studies and Research.

Deadline for applications for fellowships for the 2008-2009 Academic Year: November 9, 2007.

Research and Travel Grants

The IHR has a modest budget for small research and travel grants to graduate students. These grants may be used to travel to research sites, archival collections, and conferences.

Applications for research and travel grants should consist of a cover letter describing the importance of the project or conference (include the conference program, if available); and a detailed budget with as precise estimates as possible (meals and entertainment expenses will not be covered). The IHR will consider requests up to $500, but because funding is limited, we especially welcome requests for lesser amounts.
