Humanities in the Schools is a new IHR program that promotes collaborations between our university and local schools by sponsoring two projects: the Graduate Student Speakers Bureau, and the Teacher Scholar program.

Graduate Student Speaker’s Bureau

IHR launched the Graduate Student Speaker’s Bureau in January of 2003. UCSC Graduate students in the Humanities are available to give classroom presentations to Santa Cruz and Monterey County high schools, junior high schools, and middle schools. Our graduate students have been selected on the basis of their areas of expertise, and on their abilities to communicate to middle and high-school students. They can tailor their presentations to meet the instructional needs of teachers and their classrooms.

These presentations are free of charge, and can be on a variety of topics in English-Language Arts and History-Social Science. Our graduate students work in the fields of History, Literature, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Cultural Studies.

For more information, or to schedule a classroom presentation, please e-mail the program administrator.

Teacher Scholar Program

Beginning in the fall of 2003, IHR will launch the Teacher Scholar program in partnership with UCSC Extension. We plan a series of seminars on topics in the humanities that will assist middle, junior and high school teachers with curriculum enrichment by providing presentation and analysis of current trends and questions in their fields. The Teacher Scholar program will allow teachers in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties to immerse themselves in academic topics in a university setting, and explore a variety of subjects in the humanities regardless of their own fields of study. Seminar sessions are held on two days, two weeks apart. Seminars are free, lunch is provided, and enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Participants have the option of receiving one credit from UCSC Extension; the fee for credit is $55. All seminars will take place on the UCSC campus.
