The Mediterranean Studies Research Unit sponsors a Reading Group, which brings together faculty and graduate students in different disciplines to develop awareness of the significance of the Mediterranean as an arena of research and reflection. Through readings, discussion and guest lectures its members debate the nature of "the Mediterranean" as a historical, cultural, social and economic entity and assess its validity and the limits of its usefulness as a historiographical and intellectual concept. By investigating the Mediterranean's role as zone of interaction and conflict the area is set into a regional rather than national framework, suggesting new perspectives on questions such as the emergence of modernity and the ways in which Europe is currently being transformed.

Faculty, teaching staff, graduate students and seniors are welcome.

Proposals for readings and guest speakers are encouraged.
