The Pre- and Early Modern Studies (PEMS) research group is an interdisciplinary group of UCSC faculty and graduate students whose work focuses on the cultures of pre-industrial Europe, reconceptualizing, through innovative theoretical approaches, the traditional academic areas of Classics, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies that reaches beyond the west. Since 1992, PEMS has sponsored a variety of research and pedagogical activities and events, including speakers, a newsletter, a UCHRI seminar, and conferences. In 1999-2000, PEMS developed an ongoing speaker series, sponsored an international conference, and funded a GSR to prepare a newsletter and maintain a website. PEMS sponsors two conferences on an ongoing annual basis: a conference on "genre" (tragedy, romance, history, etc.) involving outside speakers; and an in-house symposium on the topic of Leximatics, which includes an annual call for papers from faculty at UCSC. Both of these conferences are designed to be interdisciplinary and broad in their historical reach. In addition, PEMS sponsors on-going reading groups, one of which is organized in conjunction with the annual genre conference; the other, "viva voce," involves dramatic readings of primary texts.
