Infrastructure

All accounting will be done by the staff of the Institute for Humanitites Research (ihrstaff@ucsc.edu), currently located at Oakes College. After budget approval, all receipts (signed by the contact person and clearly labeled "IHR research unit expenses") should be sent to Program Manager, mailstop: IHR/CCS, for reimbursement; the contact person may also need to sign certain forms. The Events Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating activities among the units and securing rooms and lodging for speakers and events. If the unit employs a GSR, the GSR will be responsible for producing publicity flyers and photocopying.

Research Unit Application and Funding Guidelines

In its initial year of funding, IHR  funded three research units: Feminist Studies, Mind and Meaning, and Pre- and Early Modern Studies (PEMS).  In subsequent years, as IHR obtains increased funding, it will sponsor additional Research Units. If you are interested in forming or participating in a Research Unit, we suggest that you meet with interested faculty and graduate students, develop a draft proposal, and submit it to the IHR Steering Committee. These guidelines are intended to provide interested Research Unit participants with a framework for planning such proposals.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2008-2009

Research Units are groups of faculty, working closely with graduate students, who engage in sustained examination of intellectual issues in the humanities and organize conferences, seminars, and other activities.

Research Units are invited to apply for IHR funding for academic year 2008-2009. Continued funding of a Research Unit is contingent upon: 1) the availability of funding, and 2) demonstrated ability to carry out proposed activities.

Funding Guidelines

Research Units may apply for up to $5000 in funding (awards will be in the $3000-5000 range), as well as funds for a part-time (24.999%) Graduate Student Researcher (with the GSR's work time typically spread over three quarters. A part-time GSR hired for a year would work about 3 hours per week or 7.5% monthly for three quarters).

An application to establish or continue a Research Unit should include:

1) a brief statement of your activities for 2007-08 (we will use this in our annual report, on which future funding depends).
2) a list of proposed activities for 2008-09 (this need not include a final list of speakers or activities, but please be as specific as you can).
3) a list of the coordinator and active participants with contact information (email is fine).
4) an indication of whether or not the unit intends to appoint a GSR
5) a detailed budget with as precise cost estimates as possible, projected through the academic year.

This year, because of the overall campus budget situation, we are advising Research Units to take careful stock of their other potential sources of funding and NOT to plan activities that required substantial cosponsorship monies unless other units have indicated a willingness to provide such funding. We remind you that Research Units may not regrant funds to other campus units, although you are welcome to propose joint activities in your application to us. We encourage you to plan activities that support ongoing research: seminars, colloquia, invited speakers, and small workshops. We do not intend Research Unit funds to be used to produce major multi-day conferences.

DUE DATE FOR ALL PROPOSALS: May 2008.
Deliver to Stephanie Casher, IHR/CCS, 15 Cowell Commons.
